Iconic rock bar Understellet in Copenhagen closes after 30 years

After nearly three decades of serving Copenhagen’s rock enthusiasts, the iconic Understellet bar on Nørrebrogade 24 will close permanently on April 30th. The announcement, shared via a Facebook post, has marked the end of an era for many locals and regular patrons.

Falling visitor numbers and rising costs contributed to closure

Morten Jonatan Bavngaard, a long-time employee of Understellet, stated that a significant decline in guest numbers coupled with increasing operational costs played major roles in the decision to close. However, he also pointed to missed opportunities to revitalize the venue as a contributing factor to its demise.

“There were many suggestions for renewal over the years, none of which would have required major investments,” Bavngaard told KøbenhavnLiv. “But now it’s too late,” he added, expressing regret over what he sees as preventable missteps.

The outdated music policy hindered Understellet’s appeal

Bavngaard highlighted one particular issue: the music selection. For years, Understellet maintained a strict rule, set by founder Jørn Tybring Taaning, that only songs from artists he had seen live could be played. Even after Taaning’s death, the policy remained untouched.

“It’s literally been the same 100 songs played over and over,” said Bavngaard. “There is a deep nostalgia associated with the playlist, but it hasn’t adapted to a younger audience.”

He believes that updating the music repertoire could have attracted a new generation of patrons, potentially reversing the bar’s fortunes.

A historic location with deep roots in Copenhagen

Before becoming Understellet in 1995, the building was home to Copenhagen’s last sack factory and later a pub called Sækken. Understellet carried on the tradition of welcoming diverse crowds, becoming a cherished place for those who valued a relaxed and alternative atmosphere.

Today, the building still houses 2,000-liter beer tanks, making it ideally suited for a bar rather than a cocktail lounge or other business model.

“Starting something entirely different here would be foolish,” Bavngaard said, emphasizing the importance of preserving the site’s legacy as a place “where everyone belongs.”

The future remains uncertain

Despite efforts to contact the current owner for comment, no statement has been provided. As the final night approaches, Copenhagen bids farewell to one of its most beloved rock bars, a place that has been more than just a venue — it has been a community.
