Nordic Office of Architecture, in collaboration with Arup Architecture and Rodeo Arkitekter, has been announced as the winner of the high-profile architectural competition to design the new headquarters of NRK, Norway’s public broadcaster. The winning proposal, titled “Sirkulær”, was chosen unanimously by the competition jury.
‘Sirkulær’ concept deemed robust and future-oriented
According to Vibeke Fürst Haugen, Director-General of NRK and member of the jury, the “Sirkulær” concept stood out among submissions from three renowned architectural teams:
“It was the proposal that best met our needs and the competition’s award criteria. The solution appears solid, robust, open and inviting. We believe this concept provides the best foundation for succeeding as a unified and powerful media house in the future.”
The evaluation process was described as both challenging and exciting, given the high quality of competing entries. The jury’s unanimous decision underscores the strength and clarity of the selected proposal.
Construction site set at Normannsløkka, Oslo
The new NRK headquarters will be built in the Normannsløkka area, located in the Ensjø district of Oslo. The move marks a significant shift in NRK’s operations, aiming to consolidate its functions in a modern, purpose-built facility.
The winning team has so far submitted only a conceptual design. Detailed plans will follow after a ten-day standstill period, as stipulated by public procurement rules, before the contract is officially signed.
Completion scheduled for 2029
The new NRK headquarters is expected to be completed and ready for occupation by 2029, aligning with the broadcaster’s long-term strategy to modernize its infrastructure and better adapt to the demands of contemporary media production.
This development not only represents a key architectural milestone in Oslo but also reinforces NRK’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and openness in its public service mission.
