Swedish hit “Chicken Banana” goes viral across the globe

A quirky Swedish pop tune is taking the internet by storm. “Chicken Banana”, created by the production group Crazy Music Channel, is climbing charts and racking up millions of views on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube. With its infectious beat and bouncy dance, the song has become a global sensation, embraced by content creators from Brazil to Japan.

At the time of writing, the music video for “Chicken Banana” sits at number 56 on YouTube’s list of the most viewed videos worldwide—a remarkable feat for a track released without major label backing.

The creators behind the viral hit

The minds behind the song are seasoned Swedish producers Michel Petré, Bruno Stelledrengel, and Maads Kvillelunde. In an interview with SVT Kulturnyheterna, Petré described the project as a creative gamble:

“We had some other projects that didn’t quite work out, so we said, let’s just do something outside the box—something wild and silly. The result was ‘Chicken Banana’.”

The trio’s willingness to embrace absurdity seems to have paid off. Videos featuring the track’s signature swaying dance have flooded TikTok, inspiring countless remixes, parodies, and animated versions.

A new chapter in novelty pop

Petré, who has worked in the music industry for nearly five decades, is no stranger to novelty hits. He was previously involved in international chart-toppers like September’s Cry for You” and the infamous Crazy Frog remix of Axel F. For him, “Chicken Banana” falls squarely into the “novelty pop” genre: music that isn’t meant to be taken too seriously but is designed to entertain and go viral.

As the song gains traction, the music industry is taking note. Merchandise—including toys, dolls, and branded apparel—is already in demand. Licensing deals for inclusion in films, TV shows, and video games are reportedly under negotiation.

Global reach, local roots

Though its appeal is universal, the song is rooted in a distinctly Scandinavian approach to humor and creativity. Its simple lyrics, exaggerated dance, and offbeat charm echo a Nordic tradition of embracing the whimsical in pop culture—from Iceland’s Eurovision acts to Norway’s Ylvis and their viral hit “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)”.

Whether “Chicken Banana” has staying power remains to be seen, but for now, it’s proof that a dose of silliness—and a clever social media strategy—can still cut through the noise of the global music market.
