Danish and Swedish royal couples will celebrate Øresund Bridge’s 25th anniversary together

The royal couples of Denmark and Sweden will come together on July 1, 2025, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Øresund Bridge (Øresundsbroen). The joint celebration is set to take place on both sides of the Øresund Strait, underscoring the historic and symbolic significance of the transnational link between the two countries.

King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark will be joined by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. According to a press release from Øresundsbron, the event will begin on the Swedish side of the bridge, followed by a motorcade across the bridge with a ceremonial stop at the artificial island of Peberholm.

“We look forward to celebrating this milestone together and reflecting on the years our countries have been connected,” said Linus Eriksson, CEO of Øresundsbron.

From vision to reality: a symbol of Nordic unity

The Øresund Bridge was inaugurated on July 1, 2000, by the reigning monarchs of the time, who also met on Peberholm. The bridge, which connects Copenhagen (København) and Malmö, has since played a crucial role in forming a cross-border metropolitan region, facilitating travel, commerce, and cultural exchange.

The Øresund fixed link consists of a nearly 8-kilometer bridge, a 4-kilometer tunnel, and the man-made island of Peberholm, which was created to link the tunnel and bridge structures. Although uninhabited, Peberholm is now home to a thriving ecosystem, including hares, rabbits, mice, and a range of rare or endangered insects.

A quarter-century of connection

Since its opening, the Øresund Bridge has become more than just an infrastructure project—it has evolved into a powerful symbol of Nordic cooperation. The 2025 anniversary not only marks a technical achievement but also the success of a shared vision for regional integration that began over two decades ago.

“The visions presented in the inauguration speeches in 2000 have become a reality. Every day, the ties across the strait are strengthened thanks to the fixed connection between Denmark and Sweden,” stated the official press communication from Øresundsbron.

This year’s royal commemoration will reflect on the enduring legacy of the bridge and its role in shaping the cultural and economic landscape of the region.
