A major security alert took place friday evening in Malmö, southern Sweden, after at least ten hand grenades were discovered in a backpack. The incident prompted police to cordon off a large area in the Västra hamnen district, a residential neighborhood best known for the iconic skyscraper Turning Torso.
Residents urged to stay indoors
Police received reports about suspicious objects shortly before 18:30. Within 45 minutes, authorities issued an emergency alert (VMA – Viktigt Meddelande till Allmänheten), advising residents to stay indoors, avoid windows, and respect police barriers.
Bomb squad secures the area
The bomb squad arrived at the scene later that evening to safely handle and remove the explosive devices. The operation concluded shortly after 22:00, and police spokesperson Evelina Olsson announced the lifting of emergency restrictions, enabling residents to resume normal activity.
“Our VMA will be lifted, meaning that the police barriers will be reduced, and hopefully, all residents and everyone else will be able to move freely again,” Olsson said to news agency TT.
Olsson confirmed that at least ten grenades were involved but couldn’t specify the exact number.
Investigation underway, no arrests yet
No suspects have been apprehended so far. The incident is currently under investigation as a violation of laws related to flammable and explosive materials. Police have not yet provided further details regarding potential motives or the origins of the explosives.
Malmö has previously experienced challenges with organized crime, and incidents involving explosives have drawn considerable public attention. Authorities continue to investigate, emphasizing public safety as their priority.
