A Swedish lottery player has made history by winning an astonishing 1.25 billion Swedish kronor (approximately €109 million) in Tuesday evening’s Eurojackpot draw. This win is the largest lottery prize ever recorded in Sweden.
According to Sofie Hodén, spokesperson for Svenska Spel, the state-owned gaming operator, the winner was understandably shocked upon receiving the news.
“The person was in shock and trembling. The magnitude of the win hadn’t fully sunk in, so we agreed I’d call back tomorrow,” Hodén told TT news agency.
A modest bet leads to historic payout
The lucky winner placed a modest 150 kronor (€13) bet, which secured them the unprecedented jackpot amount of 1,254,052,648 kronor. Hodén noted that the winner had adjusted their lottery numbers after reading an article, unknowingly setting themselves up for the massive windfall.
“It’s completely incredible,” Hodén remarked. “I myself got goosebumps when delivering the news.”
Record-breaking Eurojackpot in Sweden
This jackpot surpasses Sweden’s previous Eurojackpot record, held by a player from Örebro who won 562 million kronor (€49 million) in 2019. Another notable win occurred last summer, when a participant from Skåne claimed more than 250 million kronor (€21.7 million).
Lottery prizes up to five million kronor (€435,000) are usually paid directly. However, due to the extraordinary sum involved, the current winner will participate in a dedicated bank meeting for financial and legal counseling before receiving the payout.
