Norwegian expands at Billund Airport after Ryanair’s departure

Norwegian

Passengers flying from Billund Airport (Billund Lufthavn) have a reason to celebrate as Norwegian Air announces new flight routes, effectively filling the gap left by Ryanair’s recent departure. Starting June 30, Norwegian will launch a year-round route connecting Billund directly to London Gatwick Airport. Additionally, the airline will increase flights to popular Spanish destinations Alicante and Malaga.

Ryanair’s exit opens doors for Norwegian

This expansion follows Ryanair’s controversial decision to shut down its Billund base from January 31, citing disagreements with the Danish government over the recently implemented flight tax aimed at enhancing sustainability.

Sara Neergaard, Norwegian Denmark’s Head of Communications and Public Affairs, stated in a press release:

“With Ryanair’s exit, we now see a unique opportunity to strengthen our presence at Billund Airport and in Western Denmark. The new route to London Gatwick is the first step, and we are continually assessing opportunities to further expand our offerings from Billund.”

Billund strengthens its European connectivity

The new routes significantly enhance Billund Airport’s connectivity, offering greater convenience for travelers in Jutland and supporting local tourism and business. Norwegian’s decision highlights confidence in the region’s travel demand and addresses the immediate vacuum created by Ryanair’s departure.

Flight tax controversy

Ryanair’s departure came amid disputes with Denmark’s introduction of a flight tax designed to reduce aviation emissions. The Irish low-cost giant criticized the measure, arguing it negatively impacts affordability and consumer choice.

The company, however, appears ready to leverage this situation strategically, positioning itself as a sustainable and reliable carrier committed to serving Danish travelers.

This development signals a shifting landscape in Danish aviation, with Norwegian Air poised to capitalize on emerging opportunities.
