Fehmarnbelt Tunnel: connecting Denmark and Germany

The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, scheduled for completion in 2029, will stretch approximately 18 kilometers beneath the Fehmarn Belt, significantly improving travel between Scandinavia and Central Europe. Upon completion, the tunnel will become the world’s longest immersed tunnel, accommodating a dual-track railway and a four-lane motorway. The tunnel will reduce travel times dramatically—from the current 45-minute ferry crossing down to just 7 minutes by train or 10 minutes by car.

Economic and environmental benefits

This massive infrastructure investment, estimated at approximately €7 billion, aims not only to enhance mobility but also to significantly benefit the regional economy through increased trade, tourism, and employment opportunities. Environmentally, shifting transport from ferry to electric trains and motor vehicles is expected to substantially reduce carbon emissions, aligning the project with sustainability goals.

Unique construction technique: building with giant concrete segments

Construction, which started in 2021, utilizes an innovative method involving giant precast concrete tunnel segments. These segments, weighing thousands of tonnes each, are manufactured on land and then submerged and connected underwater—a technique often compared to building with “giant Lego blocks.

The first major tunnel element was successfully completed in December 2023, marking an important milestone for the ambitious project.

Engaging the community

The newly opened viewing platform represents a strategic initiative to actively involve local communities and visitors, fostering public understanding and support. The impressive turnout at the platform’s opening demonstrates significant public interest and pride in this landmark project, which is set to reshape regional transportation and connectivity.
