Copenhagen Libraries: record book loans in 2024

Copenhagen libraries, renowned for their modern design and comprehensive services, have set a new record in book lending. As residents flock to these cultural hubs, the surge in usage is prompting significant investments to keep pace with growing demand.

Record lending boosts community engagement

In recent years, Copenhagen Libraries (Københavns Biblioteker) have experienced an impressive increase in popularity. Last year alone, the number of book loans rose by 15% —a trend that experts predict will continue into 2025. This growth is reflective not only of the city’s commitment to cultural and educational resources but also of a broader shift towards community-driven learning environments. Notably, over half of the books checked out at lending stations are for children, underscoring the libraries’ role in fostering early literacy and lifelong learning.

Municipality invests in new sorting equipment

To support this rising demand, the municipality is investing in the upgrade of essential library technology. The existing sorting system, installed in 2014, has become worn out much faster than anticipated due to the increased volume of returned books. As Jakob Heide Petersen, head of Københavns Biblioteker (Copenhagen Libraries), explains:

“The old facility is from 2014 and it has worn out faster than expected.”

In response, the municipality is allocating 5.3 million Danish kroner (approximately 710,000 EUR) for a new, more efficient sorting system. This investment aims to ensure that library services remain seamless and capable of handling future growth.

Modern library services enhance user experience

Copenhagen’s libraries are celebrated for their innovative approach to service delivery. Beyond traditional book lending, they offer a range of digital resources, cultural events, and community programs that cater to diverse interests. These modern services not only enrich the cultural landscape of the city but also help maintain the libraries’ reputation as key community centers. The ongoing improvements and investments highlight the municipality’s commitment to supporting public infrastructure that benefits all citizens.
