In a significant move reshaping the Nordic media landscape, Norwegian media conglomerate Schibsted has acquired TV4 media’s television and media operations from Telia. The deal covers Sweden’s flagship TV channel TV4 and Finland’s MTV, marking a strategic realignment for both companies.
TV4 media acquisition deal
According to Schibsted, the transaction is valued at 6.8 billion NOK (approximately 646 million EUR), highlighting the strategic importance of the acquisition.
Telia, focusing on its core competency of delivering world-class online services, explained the rationale behind the sale. As Telia’s CEO Patrik Hofbauer stated in a press release:
“Our priority is to focus on what Telia does best – delivering world-class online services that millions of people rely on every day – and this agreement reflects exactly that.”
In connection with the sale, Telia is also writing down 2 billion SEK (approximately 178 million EUR), marking a significant financial adjustment following its recent purchase of TV4.

Schibsted’s strategic expansion
The acquisition bolsters Schibsted Media’s already extensive portfolio, which includes prominent assets such as Svenska Dagbladet and Aftonbladet in Sweden, and VG, Aftenposten, and E24 in Norway. The addition of TV4 and MTV not only expands Schibsted’s reach in the Nordic region but also reinforces its commitment to independent journalism and quality content.
Schibsted Media’s chairman, Kjersti Løken Stavrum, highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating:
“It is of crucial importance to strengthen Schibsted Media’s portfolio, especially at a time when democracy and freedom of expression are under pressure.”
This move aligns with Schibsted’s broader strategy to invest in high-quality media products and fortify independent journalism across the region. Schibsted want to ensure the company’s long-term competitiveness in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
TV4 and MTV: dominating the Nordic television markets
Both TV4 and MTV have long held leading positions in their respective television markets as major commercial broadcasters operating multiple channels. In Sweden, TV4‘s network consistently ranks among the most-watched, often capturing up to 30% of prime-time viewership, which underscores its dominance in Swedish television.

Similarly, in Finland, MTV operates several popular channels, securing a significant audience share that reinforces its market leadership. Their impressive audience metrics not only validate the groups’ prominence but also enhance the strategic value of the acquisition for Schibsted.

Nordic media future
Pending regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to be finalized by the third quarter of 2025. This deal comes at a time when the Nordic media industry is undergoing significant transformation, with increasing investments in digital platforms and content innovation.
However, the acquisition coincides with Schibsted Media’s announced restructuring plans, including a reduction of approximately 350 jobs during 2025. Despite these challenges, the deal is widely seen as a forward-looking investment that will strengthen Schibsted’s position as a leading provider of quality journalism and innovative media solutions.
Schibsted’s boosting the Nordic Media Portfolio
Schibsted’s acquisition of TV4 media marks a pivotal shift in the Nordic media market. By integrating TV4 and MTV into its portfolio, Schibsted not only diversifies its offerings but also reaffirms its commitment to sustaining independent journalism and high-quality content in turbulent times. As the media landscape continues to evolve, this landmark deal is set to influence media investments and content strategy across the region.
