Iceland has spoken, and the results are in: the brothers VÆB have triumphed in the national selection contest, Söngvakeppnin 2025, earning the honor to represent Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with their entry “Róa“. This victory was confirmed after two semi-finals and a grand final, where a 50/50 split between an international jury and public vote determined the outcome.
The road to victory
The excitement built over three thrilling shows, culminating in a decisive final at RVK Studios in Reykjavík. Hosted by Benedikt Valsson, Fannar Sveinsson, and Guðrún Dís Emilsdóttir, the event showcased six talented acts competing for Iceland’s Eurovision ticket to Basel. For the semi-finals, all entries were performed in Icelandic, while the final allowed artists the freedom to choose their language of performance – a decision that will carry over to the Eurovision stage if selected.
Notable guest performances added extra sparkle to the night, with appearances by Herra Hnetusmjör, Hera Björk (who represented Iceland at Eurovision 2010 and 2024), and Käärijä (who represented Finland at Eurovision 2023) together with Hooja. In a format change not seen since 2012, the final did away with the superfinal round, relying solely on one decisive round of voting.

Who are VÆB?
VÆB are made up of brothers Matthías Davíð and Hálfdán Helgi, or Matti and Bubbi as they are sometimes referred to by their nearest and dearest. The pair first competed in Söngvakeppnin 2024, where they made the final with their song Bíómynd.
Since then, they’ve dabbled further in Eurovision Song Contest iconography thanks to their Icelandic-language cover of their country’s 2006 entry Congratulations by Silvia Night.
The winning song: “Róa”
“Róa” – a dynamic and captivating entry – was penned by Hálfdán Helgi Matthíasson, Ingi Þór Garðarsson, and Matthías Davíð Matthíasson. The track’s infectious energy and unique sound resonated with both the international jurors and the Icelandic public, ensuring that VÆB emerged as clear winners of Söngvakeppnin 2025.
Eurovision 2025: what lies ahead
VÆB’s journey is far from over. The duo is set to take the stage during the first half of Semi-final 1 on May 13, 2025. As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on Iceland’s latest representatives, who promise to bring a fresh and vibrant performance to one of Europe’s most beloved music events.
