A record 35% increase in volunteers has bolstered the Danish Home Guard (Hjemmeværnet) this past year—the largest single-year rise in over 40 years. With 43.000 Danish citizens now enlisting, the organization is reversing decades of decline amid escalating global geopolitical crises, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and strained relations with the United States.
Historic volunteer surge
The number of volunteers joining the Danish Home Guard (Hjemmeværnet) surged by 35% compared to the previous year—the largest increase since 1983. This historic jump comes as global political instability and security threats push citizens to take a more active role in national defense.
Generalmajor Gunner Arpe Nielsen, head of Hjemmeværnet, explained the significance of this boost:
“It is very positive, because the amount of tasks is growing these years, and we need more to solve them.”

Volunteer motivations in a geopolitically uncertain world
The renewed interest in volunteering is largely driven by the tense global situation. Many Danes now feel a personal responsibility to contribute to the Denmark’s defense, spurred by the ongoing war in Ukraine and escalating tensions with the United States. These international developments have heightened public awareness about the importance of national security.
One volunteer, 38-year-old Anna Kirstine Kaae, shared her personal motivation for enlisting. After returning to Denmark from several years abroad—during which she experienced the stark realities of conflict in places like Israel—Anna found that joining the Danish Home Guard (Hjemmeværnet) provided her with a sense of purpose amid global chaos. She stated:
“It gives a kind of inner calm, when everything is so chaotic around us – so I have this, which means something.”
What this means for Danish Defense in times of global crisis
The record increase in volunteer numbers reflects not only a shift in public sentiment but also a strategic strengthening of Denmark’s military preparedness in response to global challenges. With international tensions, especially the war in Ukraine and the ongoing strained relations with the United States, on the rise, the Danish Home Guard (Hjemmeværnet) is better positioned to meet growing domestic and international security challenges.
This surge in volunteerism is a clear signal of a more engaged citizenry—one increasingly aware of its role in national defense. As Hjemmeværnet welcomes its new members, the organization stands as a testament to Denmark’s commitment to adapting and fortifying its defense in a rapidly changing world.
