EU invites USA foreign secretaty after Greenland dispute

Brussels has extended an official invitation to U.S. Secretary of State Marc Rubio, calling for a meeting with the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas. This diplomatic move comes after tensions arose between the EU and the U.S. regarding Greenland.

In a statement following discussions among EU foreign ministers, Kallas expressed readiness to visit Washington herself if necessary.

“We are prepared to negotiate with the United States, but not when it comes to Greenland,” Kallas said. “We stand firmly with our member state, Denmark, and its autonomous territory, Greenland.”

The controversy surrounding Greenland has sparked speculation, but Kallas was quick to dismiss any hypothetical scenarios. “We should not engage in speculation about ‘what if’ situations. Now is not the time for that,” she stated.

The EU’s strong support for Denmark and Greenland underscores the bloc’s commitment to protecting the sovereignty of its member states and associated territories. This latest development signals the importance of fostering transparent dialogue between Brussels and Washington to navigate this sensitive issue effectively.

As the invitation to Rubio remains open, all eyes are now on how the U.S. will respond to the EU’s overture for diplomatic discussions.
