Spotify and Ericsson donate millions for Trump’s inauguration

Two well-known Swedish companies, Ericsson and Spotify, have donated large sums of money to the inauguration of the U.S. President Donald Trump. These donations, totaling millions of kronor, highlight the involvement of international businesses in American political events and underline their strategic interests in the U.S. market.

Ericsson’s Contribution to Trump’s Inauguration

Ericsson, a leading telecom company, donated 5.5 million kronor (around 500.000 euros) to Trump’s inauguration committee. This marked the first time Ericsson had ever contributed to a U.S. presidential inauguration, as reported by the Swedish business newspaper Dagens industri.

“Ericsson has joined other technology leaders in supporting the committee’s activities through a donation” stated a message shared on the company’s internal network, which Dagens industri accessed.

Börje Ekholm, Ericsson’s CEO, elaborated on the company’s motivations in an intranet message:

“Our strong market share in the USA and our commitment to secure networks make us a critical part of the national security structure. The donation reflects this and our growing commitment to the USA at a crucial time on the path towards a fully digital economy.”

Spotify’s involvement in the inauguration fund

Spotify, the global music streaming platform, also contributed financially to the inauguration fund, as done by other big tech like Google, Apple and Meta. Spotify donatated 1.7 kronor (about 150.000 euros).

The Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter first reported the news on Monday evening. When approached for details, Spotify’s press team declined to comment on the specific figures.

Strategic Interests in the U.S. Market

Both Ericsson and Spotify have significant stakes in the United States. Ericsson plays a pivotal role in developing secure communication networks across the country, while Spotify enjoys a large and growing base of American users. Their financial contributions may reflect a strategic desire to strengthen their relationships with the U.S. government and market.

Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States on Monday in Washington, D.C. The event relied heavily on corporate donations, including those from international companies. While some may question the involvement of foreign businesses in U.S. political events, these contributions underscore the interconnected nature of global business and American politics.
