In a bold statement, Doris J. Jensen, the political spokesperson for Greenland’s ruling Siumut party, has reiterated Greenland’s sovereignty and its aspirations for independence. Her message, directed at figures like Elon Musk, Donald Trump Jr., and Danish politicians, leaves no room for ambiguity: “Greenland belongs to the Greenlandic people, and we govern our country.”
Jensen’s declaration comes amidst increasing interest in Greenland’s resources and strategic position. “Greenland and its people are not for sale. However, we welcome collaborations with other nations on mutual interests,” she emphasized, underscoring the nation’s desire to develop partnerships while maintaining autonomy.
A Quest for Independence
As Greenland strives for full independence, Siumut has focused on enhancing the nation’s capacity for international cooperation. Jensen highlighted the importance of building strategic partnerships with developed nations, saying, “To advance our development, we must actively engage with the international community.”
Historically, Denmark has conducted negotiations with the United States on Greenland’s behalf. Jensen questioned why Greenland’s independent initiatives are often viewed as problematic, stating, “It is difficult to understand why it should be an issue for us to take the initiative in forging relationships with other nations.”
Strengthening Self-Governance
Greenland’s Self-Government Act already grants the nation the right to engage in dialogues and establish collaborations in areas under its jurisdiction. These include education, healthcare, mining, infrastructure, energy, trade, and tourism. “These sectors provide excellent starting points for strengthening our international relationships and driving economic growth,” Jensen noted.
The Siumut party has called for the transfer of all responsibilities to Greenland as part of its independence ambitions. “Achieving independence requires us to create the best possible conditions for our country,” Jensen said. This includes diversifying revenue streams and seizing emerging opportunities for dialogue and development.
A Call for Fair Recognition
Jensen addressed concerns about Greenland’s outreach efforts being perceived as provocative. She pointed to Denmark’s limited involvement in supporting Greenland’s international engagements, adding, “It is unreasonable for our initiatives to be seen as contentious.”
A key example of this dynamic is the Pituffik Space Base, which holds significant military importance but contributes little to Greenland’s economy. “Greenland must have a say in matters that impact its future,” Jensen asserted.

As Greenland moves closer to realizing its independence, Jensen’s message is clear: the nation will chart its own course. “We govern Greenland, and we are committed to finding our own way,” she concluded, calling for unity among Greenland’s people to achieve their shared vision.
