NATO deploys ships to Baltic Sea after cable damage incident

NATO is deploying two ships to the Baltic Sea following damage to cables connecting Finland and Estonia on December 25. Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen confirmed the move in an interview with Finnish media outlet Yle.

“NATO is sending two ships to the area, and we are also increasing our presence in the region in other ways,” Valtonen stated.

On December 30, NATO announced plans to strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea to prevent future incidents. However, specific details on the scope of the increased presence remain unclear.

Increased Focus on Critical Infrastructure Protection

The deployment comes amid heightened concerns over the security of critical infrastructure in the region. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, had previously called for a stronger NATO presence, particularly near key infrastructure.

The damaged cables underscore the vulnerabilities of undersea infrastructure in geopolitically sensitive areas.
